Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do you test the adapters?
A. Click here for more information on our testing procedures.
Q. What is the operational difference between GaugeMate Gold and GaugeMate Silver adapters?
A. When using Gold adapters, the spent hull is removed as you normally would - the adapter stays in place. With Silver, the adapter and the spent hull are removed together from the chamber. The user then manually removes the hull from the adapter and places the adapter back in the chamber.
Q. What kind of patterns and velocity does factory ammunition produce in your adapters?
A. Click here for information on patterning and velocity results.
Q. What kind of ammunition do you recommend?
A. Remington STS and Winchester AA are the only types of ammunition we recommend. Hulls of lesser construction may bulge or stick.
Q. Have your adapters proven themselves in formal competition?
A. Click here to read about GaugeMate in competition.
Q. Have any shooting sports magazines reviewed your adapters?
A. Click here to read what shooting sports publications have had to say about GaugeMate adapters.
Q. How are your adapters made?
A. They are precision machined from stainless steel to standards set by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufactures Institute, Inc. (SAAMI). Custom adapters are made to standards set by the Commission Internationale Permanente pour l’Epreuve des Armes à Feu portatives (CIP).
Q. Why do you use stainless steel?
A. Because it is durable, corrosion-resistant and is less apt to pick up potentially harmful abrasive material.
Q. What gives GAUGEMATE-GOLD adapters their distinctive color? Are they brass plated?
A. They are plated with pure Titanium Nitride to enhance their durability and provide greater lubricity for extraction. Titanium Nitride is the same material that is used to coat heavy-duty drill bits.
Q. Can I safely use your adapters in Damascus barreled guns?
A. Many Damascus barrels have been subject to modern nitro-proof testing. It is the users responsibility to insure that any gun used is safe for modern ammunition.
Q. My gun was made in Great Britain and has 2 ½” chambers. Are your adapters compatible?
A. Yes, most of our adapters can be used in 2 ½” chambers. However, chamber dimensions weren’t standardized in Europe until the early 1900s – so, occasionally, fit may be a problem.
Q. Can I use 3” 20-g ammunition in my 12 to 20-g adapters?
A. No, they are designed for 2 ¾” ammunition.
Q. Do your adapters work in magazine-fed guns?
A. GaugeMate adapters are designed for proper function in break-action guns. They will function in a pump-action gun if single-loaded. They should not be used in semiautomatic guns.
Q. Are your adapters suitable for hunting?
A. Absolutely!
Q. How does using adapters affect recoil?
A. Generally, it’s substantially reduced. For instance, 12-g ammo contains 1 or 1 1/8 -ounce of shot. If you use a 12 to 20-g adapter, then your 20-g ammo is probably loaded with 7/8-ounce of shot. Assuming the same velocity, less weight of shot equals less recoil.
Q. Can I reload hulls that have been fired in split-adapters (10 to 12, 12 to 16, 16 to 20 and 20 to 28-g)?
A. A qualified yes. This will depend on your chamber dimensions. Customers whose chambers are “tight” report minimal (or no) cutting of the hull.
Q. Do GaugeMate users provide you with feedback?
A. Why yes... yes they do. Click here to read some of our customer feedback.
Q. Are GaugeMate adapters available from retailers?
A. Yes!
